Indonesia 2023 (II): Bandung

Day 2 - Leaving for Bandung

We booked the 3pm outbound train to Bandung that leaves from Gambir station. We had seats on the right side of the train. Thankfully enough we got to see some of the best views that the train ride could offer - paddy fields, villages and the Cikubang bridge. Well for the latter, we couldn't really see the bridge because we were on it :D

While the PeduliLindungi app is now optional, but you could still be asked to show your vaccination status/certificates when boarding the trains. When my friend bought the train tickets, the status shown on mine is "Belum divaksinasi" (Unvaccinated). So I had to show my certs on the PeduliLindungi app (it is now rebranded to SATUSEHAT app). On the way back though, I didn't have to show the certs.

We even got glimpses of the high speed train tracks that will soon cut the travel time from the usual 3 hours down to a measly 36 minutes

When we arrived 3 hours later, night fall has descended upon Bandung. We took Grab to get to the Grand Dafam hotel, located in the Braga city walk.

In the evening, we walked along Braga Citywalk and had bakso for dinner. Braga Citywalk is not as expansive and massive as Malioboro in Jogja. I would think it is at best 200 meters from end to end.

There's always a line to this cookie shop

Day 3 - Bandung

We were toying with the idea of going to Lembang. But since we were pressed for time and only had a full day in Bandung, I told my friend let's just stay put in Bandung. We had asked a couple of our Grab drivers, and the mere mention of Lembang, they will say "Macet". Lol.

Where Lembang is located

I could come back for Lembang some other time.

Once we had finished chowing down on breakfast, we walked to the Bandros bus stop. Bandros stands for Banding Tour on Bus. If I am not wrong, the fare was only 20,000 rupiah. There's no price difference between locals and foreigners. It was a great way to get quickly acquainted with the city.

We were wanting to snack on some martabak at noon but since it was Friday, the shop was closed. So we headed to Saung Angklung Udjo as recommended by my Bandung friend. There was no lunch hour show, so we had to wait for the next show at 3pm. While waiting, we killed time at the nearby cafe.

The angklung show was amazing. Performances that included kids of all ages were simply adorable. And towards the end, the audiences got to chance to play the angklung by ourselves, led the master himself. We got assigned to groups by the number that was attached to our angklung. And the numbers depict the musical notes - 1 for Do, 2 for Re, 3 for Me and so forth. I think we got to play 3 to 4 songs, including We are the champions :D

On the way back to our hotel, we tried our luck again with Martabak San Francisco. There are 2 types of martabak - martabak asin which is like the murtabak in Malaysia, and martabak manis is apam balik in Malaysia. Can you believe it that the martabaks start from 85,000 rupiah for chicken and onwards?

At night, we didn't venture out far from our hotel and stayed close to Braga. With our stomachs still full, we just went for an icecream bun sandwich at Toko Tahilalats. This Tahilalats comics even has a collaboration with Crayon Shinchan.

Day 4 - Returning to Jakarta

The morning was only spent on breakfast and packing before checking out. We opted for the 1pm train to Jakarta so we still had the rest of the afternoon when we arrived.

So long Bandung. Hope to see and the more of you soon
